Introduction to Messages – Editorial
In the autumn of 2023, an open call was launched by the ICH NGO Forum to provide an opportunity for all stakeholders to contribute messages and creative expressions in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the response has been extraordinary! The diversity of living heritage with its many stakeholders, from bearers and practitioners, NGOs, academics, focal points, UNESCO colleagues, and State Parties is clearly shown with the great variety of messages received.
The call provided the opportunity for all to contribute and to choose the form of expression. And indeed, MESSAGES have been coming in a wide range of formats from all corners of the globe. When you dive into the MESSAGES you will see videos, photographs, graphics, poems, songs and scholarly texts, as well as short messages of celebration. The tone of the majority of the messages is overwhelmingly celebratory, but a number of other themes are also emerging.
Many of the messages outline the importance of linking the future work of the Convention with sustainable development and in particular, with the writing of the next Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. In the texts, many contributors relate their personal experiences of the changes over the last twenty years, how they have contributed to these changes and what the Convention has already achieved. Others outline the challenges ahead, and a key theme here is the importance of building on the work already done to ensure civil society is involved in the working of the Convention. Contributors relate positive experiences of involvement in the ICH NGO Forum and how this enables a diversity of participation and actors in the implementation of the Convention. The Convention and its players provide a platform for future collaboration, networking and safeguarding together.
The significance of living heritage and the expressions, knowledge and wisdom it embodies is ever more relevant to assist in addressing the many challenges faced today. Individual messages describe how and why living heritage is addressing situations of conflict and emergency including climate change, and tackling marginalisation and social injustice.
The importance of the safeguarding of living heritage is a strand running through many of the messages. Overall, this call for messages has generated a great outpouring of love for living heritage.
A real passion and belief shines through for the significance of living heritage for all our shared futures.

Introduction aux ‘Messages’ ~ éditorial
À l’automne 2023, un appel ouvert a été lancé par le Forum des ONG du PCI pour offrir à toutes les parties prenantes l’opportunité de transmettre des messages et des expressions créatives pour célébrer le 20e anniversaire de la Convention de l’UNESCO de 2003 pour la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel immatériel, et la réponse a été extraordinaire!
La diversité du patrimoine vivant avec ses nombreuses parties prenantes, qu’il s’agisse des détenteurs ou de praticiens, des ONG, des universitaires, des points focaux, des collègues de l’UNESCO ou d’États parties, apparaît clairement dans la grande variété des messages reçus. L’appel a été l’occasion pour tous de contribuer et de choisir la forme d’expression. Et en effet, les MESSAGES sont arrivés sous des formes très diverses, des quatre coins du monde. Lorsque vous plongerez dans les MESSAGES, vous verrez des vidéos, des photographies, des graphiques, des poèmes, des chansons et des textes savants, ainsi que de courts messages de célébration.
Le ton de la majorité des messages est essentiellement festif, mais un certain nombre d’autres thèmes émergent également. De nombreux messages soulignent l’importance de lier les travaux futurs de la Convention au développement durable et en particulier à la rédaction des prochains objectifs de Développement Durable pour 2030. Dans les textes, de nombreux contributeurs racontent leurs expériences personnelles des changements survenus au cours des vingt dernières années, comment ils ont contribué à ces changements et ce que la Convention a déjà réalisé. D’autres soulignent les défis à venir, et un thème clé ici est l’importance de s’appuyer sur le travail déjà accompli pour garantir que la société civile soit impliquée dans le fonctionnement de la Convention. Les contributeurs racontent des expériences positives de participation au Forum des ONG du PCI et comment cela permet une diversité de participation et d’acteurs dans la mise en œuvre de la Convention. La Convention et ses acteurs offrent une plate-forme pour une future collaboration, mise en réseau et sauvegarde commune.
L’importance du patrimoine vivant et des expressions, connaissances et sagesses qu’il incarne est de plus en plus pertinente pour aider à relever les nombreux défis auxquels nous sommes confrontés aujourd’hui. Les messages individuels décrivent comment et pourquoi le patrimoine vivant répond aux situations de conflit et d’urgence, y compris le changement climatique, et s’attaque à la marginalisation et à l’injustice sociale .
L’importance de la sauvegarde du patrimoine vivant est un fil conducteur de nombreux messages.
Globalement, cet appel à messages a généré un grand élan d’amour pour le patrimoine vivant.
Une véritable passion et une réelle conviction transparaissent quant à l’importance du patrimoine vivant pour tous nos avenirs communs.
