The Association for the Preservation of Tradition is a non-governmental, non-profit organization committed to strengthening the role and visibility of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) through research, education, public presentation, and community engagement. The association continuously works to raise awareness of the importance of ICH by studying, documenting, and transmitting traditional knowledge, practices, and skills to new generations.
Its activities aim to empower local communities, preserve cultural identity, and encourage intercultural dialogue. Some of the key activities that demonstrate the association’s experience and capacity in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage include:
1. International Folklore Festival “Kozarsko kolo”
Since 2019 (with the exception of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), the Association has been the organizer of the international folklore festival “Kozarsko kolo”. The festival gathers participants from various countries who present their national dances, traditional music, songs, attire, culinary heritage, and other forms of both tangible and intangible cultural expressions. The event not only celebrates cultural diversity but also actively contributes to the intergenerational transmission and revitalization of folk traditions. A special feature of the festival is its outreach component, with performances organized in surrounding rural areas, bringing heritage closer to local communities.
2. Seminars and Round Tables
The association regularly organizes seminars, lectures, and round table discussions focused on intangible cultural heritage. These gatherings bring together experts in ethnology, anthropology, and heritage preservation, along with bearers of tradition and local stakeholders. They serve as a platform for dialogue on the protection, reinterpretation, and sustainable development of ICH in modern contexts. Topics range from traditional crafts and ritual practices to legal frameworks and community participation in heritage safeguarding.
3. Concerts, Performances, and Educational Programs
The association is actively involved in organizing and participating in concerts, stage performances, and cultural events that highlight traditional dances, songs, and music. These programs are often designed for children and youth, combining entertainment with education and contributing to the intergenerational transmission of traditional knowledge. Performances are often accompanied by workshops, exhibitions, and interactive presentations, which allow audiences to engage with the cultural content in meaningful ways. In all its activities, the association emphasizes collaboration with schools, cultural institutions, museums, and local governments.
By creating participatory and inclusive cultural experiences, the organization has successfully engaged diverse audiences and contributed to building stronger community ties through heritage. Through these initiatives, the Association for the Preservation of Tradition has demonstrated its capability to contribute to the goals of the 2003 Convention and is well-positioned to offer advisory services to the Committee, particularly in the areas of community-based safeguarding practices, heritage education, and promotion of cultural diversity.
