This thought-provoking webinar will explore the ICOMOS International Charter for Cultural Heritage Tourism 2022—a landmark document reinforcing heritage protection and community resilience through responsible tourism. As a very aspirational cultural tourism charter, it addresses the urgent need for transformative change in the face of climate crisis and global volatility. The Charter Principles provide guidance on how heritage and tourism professionals can lead this shift by aligning practice with sustainability, equity, and planetary boundaries. The Charter is a call to connect, collaborate, and make cultural heritage central to a more just and resilient future. Dr. Henares will also share his learning from experience of embedding the Charter in Tourism policies of the Philippines.

Ivan Anthony Henares, PhD is a tourism educator, cultural policy researcher, and advocate for heritage conservation in the Philippines. He is Secretary-General of the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, Commissioner of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Assistant Professor at the Asian Institute of Tourism of the University of the Philippines, Diliman, and President of the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee.

At present, he is also Chairperson of the Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Alliance (SEACHA), Chairperson of the Heritage Conservation Society, and Philippine Committee President of the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage. Dr. Henares received his PhD in Hospitality and Tourism Management and Graduate Certificate in Environmental Policy from Purdue University where he was a Fulbright-CHED Scholar. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Master of Business Administration and Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning degrees all at the University of the Philippines, Diliman.
