Strength through Culture: ICH in the Lives of Refugees

In recognition of World Refugee Day, the Working Group on Conflict and Displacement (ICH NGO Forum) held an on-line panel discussion on June 20, 2025 “Strength Through Culture: Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Lives of Refugees”.

World Refugee Day is a global moment to recognize the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home countries due to conflict or persecution. The panel discussion spotlighted the vital role of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in the experiences of refugees and displaced people.

Panelists

  • David: refugee from Nagorno-Karabakh, English and French teacher involved in ICH safeguarding.
  • Rezuwan: Rohingya refugee developing several projects documenting Rohingya culture.
  • Shakira: born and raised in the Dzaleka refugee camp in Malawi, involved in youth and girls’ initiatives in the camp.
  • Wael: Syrian refugee and a student at Columbia University, started an NGO dedicated to promoting peaceful coexistence between young people.
