HOW TO? DEVELOPING PARTICIPATORY METHODOLOGIES FOR SAFEGUARDING LIVING HERITAGE

Jorijn Neyrink

In this presentation Workshop Intangible Heritage BE aims to share from 20 years of experience in systematically developing and testing participatory methodologies for safeguarding living heritage. Taking a methodological approach, WIE set to pioneer, experiment and test a series of safeguarding methods and tools since 2003, to then share them with colleagues in the wider field, collaborate and organise training etc.
One important entry point has been to explore what participation means in relation to the different safeguarding measures:

  • What does participatory inventorying entail?
  • How to document living heritage in sound and image?
  • How can one grasp the significance or values of ICH with the community, groups and individuals concerned?
  • What approaches can be taken to transmission of living heritage?
  • How to digitize ICH and what questions and issues does it bring forward? Etc.

Another important entry point has been to understand the various roles and contributions of different stakeholders and possible partners in safeguarding ICH: how can we better understand NGOs roles as mediators and facilitators of safeguarding processes?

  • What can museums do in safeguarding ICH and how to take this collaboration forward?
  • How to work together with the tourism sector with a view to sustainable ICH tourism that may foster viable living heritage futures?

Through this presentation, Workshop Intangible Heritage hopes to look back on two decades of Research and Development in participatory safeguarding of ICH, share key learnings and point out upcoming issues for development that might be of interest and be addressed by the ICH NGO networks.
