In 2012, at the meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of the UNESCO 2003 Convention in Baku, Azerbaijan, the ICH NGO Forum  decided to establish an online journal with the title #HeritageAlive.

The journal sought to share NGOs experiences regarding safeguarding practices, both good and bad, within the area of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The concept was to share knowledge from fieldwork in communities and with practitioners, between the UNESCO accredited NGOs and experts, in order to learn from each other. An editorial board was formed, with members from all over the world, and Eivind Falk was elected as the first Editor in Chief. From 2023 Rachel Gefferie have been in charge as the new Editor-In-Chief. The online journal has published articles on a variety of different themes concerned Intangible cultural heritage and response.

In cooperation with ICHCAP we have published several books on different themes. You will find them available as pdf’s below.

ICH and armed conflicts (2026)

These case studies provide several current examples of how war and other conflicts could have a huge impact on ICH and its bearers. At the same time we have witnessed how ICH could play an important and crucial role during armed conflicts. During the webinar these NGOs, from different parts of the world, shared their experience and reflections on ICH in armed conflicts. After the webinar, the participants and the presenters expressed the need for #HeritageAlive to publish a special edition dedicated to ICH in armed conflicts.
This publication is therefore based on the contributions from the webinar, in addition to a few added contributions from NGOs working in the regions concerned. Eivind Falk is the Editor-In-Chief.

Basketry (2025)

#HeritageAlive, is a journal published every two years, with the support of ICHCAP, to promote NGOs’ experiences with the safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This latest edition, BASKETRY, sharing experiences from the field, was accomplished through the contribution of 12 authors, representing NGOs across the globe. Each article provides the field experiences from the author in practices of safeguarding the traditional knowledge and skills involving the use of a variety of materials such as plant, tree components for the braiding process, and more generally the development of by-products as part of the basketry. The publication aims to share safeguarding experiences, methodology and activities, gathered through fieldwork in collaboration with the communities concerned, the bearers and practitioners of the ICH. The publication is made in cooperation with ICHCAP, and the Editors in Chief Rachel Doorson-Gefferie and Bak Gyuri.

Storytelling (2023)

Storytelling is more than stories. Storytelling connects generations, families, friends, creates identity, curiosity and stimulates creativity, in the spirit of the 2003 Convention. This book, with the topic Storytelling, was made with contributions from twelve writers, representing different NGOs, from countries across the globe. The authors describe the current status of the storytelling tradition and provide insight in safeguarding activities of these traditions. The main project has been to share safeguarding experiences, methodology and activities, among us who are working in the field, with the communities concerned, bearers and practitioners. The publication is made in cooperation with ICHCAP, and Eivind Falk and Bak Gyuri has been the Editors-in-Chiefs.

Traditional musical instruments (2021)

This book, with the topic Traditional musical instruments, was made with contributions of fifteen writers, representing different NGOs, from countries across the globe. The authors describe the current status of traditional musical traditions and provide insight in safeguarding activities of these traditions in the spirit of the 2003 Convention. The main project has been to share safeguarding experiences, methodology and activities, among us who are working in the field, with the communities concerned, craftsmen, musicians, bearers and practitioners.

Nevertheless we considered that it would be almost impossible to give a fair impression for understanding the musical instruments from text only. We wanted to listen to the sound of the musical instruments, in order to get a better and more fair impression. Therefor we decided to add a playlist, made available online. In this way, we can listen to sample of music referring to each chapter.

Traditional food (2019)

ICHCAP published the book Living Heritage Series – Traditional Food in collaboration with the ICHNGO Forum’s #HeritageAlive.

Living Heritage Series-Traditional Food showcases creative and historical traditional food from around the world through contributions from 16 writers in various countries.

Traditional medicine (2017)

#HeritageAlive has been publishing articles on a variety of themes concerning intangible cultural heritage (ICH) safeguarding since 2012. After remaining relatively steady in the past, public interest in the online journal has increased after a call for papers in relation to traditional medicine was issued. As a result the editorial board decided to publish a book dedicated to traditional medicine. Luckily ICHCAP, as a consistent producer and distributor of high-quality publications, was willing to be our partner publishing Traditional Medicine, sharing experiences from the field.

At the 12th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (12.COM) in the International Convention Center Jeju, the book entitled Traditional Medicine: exchange of experiences from the field was launched as a result of this fruitful cooperation between ICHCAP and #HeritageAlive.
